A former engineer with the US Air Force, John R. Nofsinger, PhD serves as the William H. Seward Endowed Chair in Finance for the University of Alaska Anchorage. When not teaching, John R. Nofsinger, PhD enjoys staying active and participates in numerous races. Recently he began competing in Ironman triathlons.

One of the Ironman events occurring near Anchorage is the Ironman 70.3 Canada. This race takes place on July 30, 2017, at Whistler Olympic Plaza in Whistler, Canada. The race consists of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, and 13.1-mile run. Racers start at Alta Lake and then bike through Callaghan Valley through Whistler. The route continues to Rutherford Creek and loops back to Whistler. The bike course runs adjacent to Whistler Olympic Plaza.

At the end of the 2016 racing season, competitors ranked their favorite facets about specific ironman courses. Entitled The Athlete’s Choice Awards, the list ranked the top 10 races in a variety of categories. The Ironman 70.3 Canada was named the third best race overall behind New Zealand and France. It also tied for sixth best overall swim, fourth best overall bike, and eighth best overall run. In a bonus category, the race received the best restaurants vote.
